What is Homeschool Friend

Homeschool Friend is an online English language learning program making a difference in the lives of Korean students. Our program uses a character-based homeschool curriculum as the foundation, and adds personal tutors who assist students via online video conferencing on a daily basis. This program centers around encouraging life impacting friendships to develop between homeschooled Christians living in North America and students living in South Korea. Through our program, we hope to disciple a new generation of Korean homeschool students equipped to change the world.

The Language Program We Offer

Our online tutoring program is designed for the tutor to instruct 1-4 students during each class. The English tutor will have no more than 30 minutes to teach per class. Lessons are taught 4 days a week for a 16-week period.

Applicant Requirements

• Tutors must be native English speakers and able to patiently communicate with South Korean homeschool students who speak English on a variety of levels.
• There are two levels of HSF Tutors:
  • Junior Tutors focus on developing the student’s conversational skills through the review of previously taught lessons and friendly general conversation through a 20-minute lesson each day, 4 days a week, for 16 weeks. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older.
  • Senior Tutors teach 30 minutes/class and are responsible for teaching the core content of the curriculum—vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and writing—in a 30-minute lesson each day, 4 days a week for 16 weeks. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and be a second-year college student or higher (approx. 60 credits or more).
• Because the classes are taught online to students living in South Korea, you will need to have access to a computer with audio/video capabilities and a reliable high speed internet connection.

Class Times

The following schedule applies according to Applicants respective time zones. All tutors must carefully consider this and provide their available teaching times upon submitting an application. If your time zone is not listed, simply list it and your available tutoring times when applying.

• West Coast Tutors: 3-10 PM (7:00 AM-2:00 PM Korea Time)
• Central Tutors: Mornings and/or 5:00 PM-10:00 PM (7:00 AM-12:00 PM Korea Time)
• Eastern Tutors: 6:00 AM-11:00 AM and/or evenings ( 7:00 PM-12:00 AM Korea Time)

Tutor Compensation

Tutors are paid a monetary amount each month. A regular bonus and payment increases are offered based on tutor performance.

• Junior Tutor wages, depending upon experience and qualifications are:
  $ 6.00/hr start rate with the ability to increase up to $10.00/hr.
• Senior Tutor wages, depending upon experience and qualifications are:
  $10-14.00/hr start rate (depending on training and experience) with the ability to increase up to $17.00/hr.

Training

For all of our Tutors, Homeschool Friend provides a downloadable training program specifically designed for HSF by a certified TESOL teacher-trainer, on “How to Teach English as a Foreign Language.” This training process will take approximately two weeks to complete prior to beginning your first class.

Getting Started

You will be receiving practical training and real world experience as you tutor international students. More importantly, you will be participating in discipling a new generation of Korean homeschool students.
